Why does driveway prep have to happen before the freeze?
Almost everything on this checklist only works while temperatures are still above zero. Crack sealant needs warm, dry pavement to cure. Stakes only go into ground that is not frozen. Downspout extensions are a five-minute job in October and a chisel-and-swear job in January.
Ajax winters make the effort worth it. The fall checklist, in order
- Seal asphalt cracks.Fill anything wider than a pencil line with asphalt crack filler on a dry day above 10 degrees. Every sealed crack is one less place for freeze-thaw to work on.
- Stake your edges.Plant driveway markers along the pavement edge, at the corners of garden beds, and beside anything hidden under snow: sprinkler heads, low lights, the water shutoff. Whoever clears your snow, machine or shovel, works blind after the first big storm.
- Redirect downspouts.A downspout that empties onto the driveway builds an ice rink there by December. Extend it onto the lawn, pointing away from paved surfaces and walkways.
- Check the garage door seal.A worn bottom seal lets meltwater creep under the door and refreeze, gluing the door down on cold mornings. Seals are cheap and replaceable in an afternoon.

- Choose where piled snow will go.A winter of snow from a double driveway is a serious volume. Pick a spot that does not bury the walkway, block sightlines at the sidewalk, or sit against the foundation.
- Prep the car side.Winter tires booked, snow brush in the trunk, and park so the municipal plow windrow does not trap the car you need at 7am.
- Decide who is clearing it, in writing.If the answer is a service, sign before the season starts. If the answer is you, be honest about the windrow: it is the heaviest part of every storm.

Where should piled snow actually go?
Downwind of the prevailing weather if you can, on grass rather than pavement, and never against the house. Snow piled on the driveway edge melts across the pavement on mild days and refreezes overnight, which recreates the exact ice problem you cleared. Piling against the foundation sends meltwater toward your basement instead.
Keep the pile clear of the sidewalk line too. Sightlines matter on corner lots, and a pile that slumps onto a public sidewalk becomes your problem in a way neighbours notice.
The one deadline on this list

What can you skip?
Plenty. You do not need pavement heating cables, fancy snow-melt mats, or a pre-winter professional driveway inspection for a healthy driveway. Skip bulk rock salt for walkways too: it is cheap, but it is the hardest option on concrete, lawns and pets. The honest test for the whole list: anything that manages water is worth doing, because in an Ajax winter, water that cannot drain becomes ice you have to deal with at 6:45 in the morning.
Questions about winter driveway prep
When should I winterize my driveway in Ajax?
Aim for October. Crack sealant needs dry pavement and daytime temperatures above about 10 degrees to cure, stakes need unfrozen ground, and Ajax's first plowable snowfall often lands in November. Doing the checklist on one mild October weekend is the realistic play.
Do driveway markers actually matter for a suburban driveway?
Yes, more than people expect. After one or two storms, the edge between pavement, lawn and garden bed disappears. Markers keep snow blowers and shovels off your grass and beds, and they protect sprinkler heads and low lighting that would otherwise be found the hard way.
Is it bad to pile snow at the end of the driveway?
Beside the entrance is fine, but never push it onto the road: shovelling snow onto the roadway is prohibited under Ontario traffic rules and creates a hazard. Keep piles on your own property, on grass where possible, away from the sidewalk line and corner sightlines.
Should I seal my whole driveway before winter?
Full sealcoating is a summer job and optional. What matters before winter is filling individual cracks so meltwater cannot get in, freeze and expand. A $20 tube of crack filler in October prevents more damage than a full sealcoat applied too late in the season.
What's the single most important item on the checklist?
Water management: downspouts and crack sealing. Freeze-thaw is what actually destroys Ajax driveways and creates the black ice that causes falls. Everything that keeps water off and out of your pavement pays for itself, usually within one winter.
